History of Acton:
Acton, California, established in 1887, is a small community with a rich history rooted in mining and agriculture. The town was founded by gold miners working in the Red Rover Mine and was named after Acton, Massachusetts, by one of the miners. During its early years, Acton served as a railroad camp from 1873 to 1876 during the construction of the Southern Pacific Railroad’s Saugus-Mojave section. This connection facilitated the transportation of mined resources and contributed to the town’s growth.
In the late 19th century, Acton gained prominence due to its mining activities, particularly gold extraction from the Red Rover and Governor mines. Notably, California Governor Henry T. Gage (1899–1903) owned the Governor Mine and even proposed relocating the state capital to Acton, though this effort was unsuccessful. By the late 1880s, the town began transitioning into a ranching and farming community. In 1889, Acton‘s first hotel and saloon, the “49er,” opened its doors and continues to operate today, offering a glimpse into the town’s storied past.
The early 20th century saw Acton maintaining its rural character while gradually integrating into the broader developments of Los Angeles County. The construction of the Antelope Valley Freeway (State Route 14) improved accessibility to the region, fostering growth and making Acton a desirable location for those seeking a rural lifestyle within reach of urban amenities. Despite modern developments, Acton has preserved its historical charm, with landmarks like the Acton Hotel and remnants of its mining heritage standing as testaments to its rich and varied history.
