Valencia
Valencia, a vibrant neighborhood in Santa Clarita within Los Angeles County, California, is nestled in the northwestern corner of the Santa Clarita Valley, just east of Interstate 5. Much of Valencia is part of a thoughtfully planned community, which became one of the four unincorporated areas—alongside Saugus, Newhall, and Canyon Country—that merged to form the city of Santa Clarita in 1987.
This area is steeped in history. Back in 1769, the Portolá expedition—Europe’s first recorded inland exploration of California—crossed the pass from the San Fernando Valley and camped along the river near present-day Valencia. The expedition encountered a vibrant native village and witnessed a wedding celebration. Fray Juan Crespí, a Spanish missionary traveling with the group, named the river Santa Clara and suggested the site would make an ideal mission location. However, on their return, the party opted for a less rigorous route through the Conejo Valley, leading to the establishment of Mission San Fernando Rey de España further south.
Valencia is designed around distinct residential villages, each offering its own unique lifestyle. These neighborhoods are close to schools, parks, shopping areas, and more, with many managed by homeowner associations that ensure community standards are upheld. Villages often host neighborhood watch programs, adding an extra layer of security. To make getting around convenient, Valencia features an innovative network of paved pathways known as paseos. These paths connect the entire community, allowing residents to travel by foot or bike without the need to cross streets at ground level. The paseo system also ties into the extensive Santa Clara River Trail that stretches to Canyon Country, making it perfect for outdoor enthusiasts.
Beyond its thoughtful planning and historical roots, Valencia offers an array of major attractions. Thrill-seekers and families flock to Six Flags Magic Mountain, one of the world’s premier amusement parks, featuring record-breaking roller coasters and exhilarating rides. Shoppers and food lovers will enjoy the Westfield Valencia Town Center, a lively hub for dining, entertainment, and retail therapy. Nature lovers can explore the Santa Clara River Trail, which provides scenic views and a peaceful escape for walkers, runners, and cyclists. Whether you’re seeking adventure, leisure, or community charm, Valencia has something for everyone.
