Saugus

Saugus, now a neighborhood within Santa Clarita, California, has a rich history that reflects its evolution from a standalone community to its incorporation into a larger city. The area was initially named Newhall after Henry Mayo Newhall, who purchased part of the Rancho San Francisco land grant. In 1879, Newhall relocated the town southward and renamed the original site Saugus, after his birthplace in Saugus, Massachusetts. This renaming marked the beginning of Saugus‘s distinct identity in the Santa Clarita Valley.

A significant landmark in Saugus‘s history is the Saugus Café, established in 1886 on San Fernando Road (now Railroad Avenue). As the oldest continuously operating restaurant in Los Angeles County, the café has served countless patrons, including notable figures like President Theodore Roosevelt and actor Clark Gable. Its enduring presence offers a tangible link to the region’s past and a testament to its longstanding community roots.

Another notable establishment was the Saugus Speedway, which opened in 1939 under the name Bonelli Stadium. The venue hosted various events, including several NASCAR races, before ceasing racing operations in 1995. Today, the site continues to serve the community as the location for the Santa Clarita Swap Meet, maintaining its role as a local gathering spot.

In 1987, Saugus, along with neighboring communities such as Canyon Country, Newhall, and Valencia, was incorporated into the city of Santa Clarita. This unification aimed to provide cohesive governance and foster a shared identity among the diverse communities within the Santa Clarita Valley. Despite this incorporation, Saugus has retained its unique historical character and continues to honor its rich heritage.

A tragic event in Saugus‘s recent history occurred on November 14, 2019, when a shooting at Saugus High School resulted in the deaths of two students and injuries to three others. The incident profoundly affected the community, leading to increased discussions on school safety and mental health awareness. In the years following, the community has worked towards healing and commemorating the lives lost, exemplifying resilience in the face of adversity.

Today, Saugus stands as a testament to the dynamic history of the Santa Clarita Valley, blending its historical roots with modern development. Landmarks like the Saugus Café and the legacy of the Saugus Speedway serve as enduring symbols of the community’s rich past, while ongoing efforts to support and strengthen the community reflect its commitment to a hopeful future.
