History of Newhall

Newhall, the southernmost and oldest community within Santa Clarita, California, boasts a rich history that has significantly shaped the region. Before the 1987 incorporation of Santa Clarita, which unified Newhall with neighboring communities such as Canyon Country, Saugus, and Valencia, Newhall existed as an unincorporated area and was the first permanent town in the Santa Clarita Valley. Its origins trace back to the Tataviam village of Tochonanga, located where Newhall stands today. Between 1797 and 1811, fifty villagers were relocated to Mission San Fernando, yet descendants continued to reside in the Newhall area.

The community derives its name from businessman Henry Mayo Newhall, a California Gold Rush pioneer born in Saugus, Massachusetts, in 1825. After amassing wealth through ventures in auctioneering and railroads, Newhall purchased the Rancho San Francisco land grant, encompassing present-day Newhall. He granted a right-of-way to the Southern Pacific Railroad, facilitating the development of the town that now bears his name.

Newhall is home to several historical landmarks that reflect its storied past. The William S. Hart County Park offers tours of the famed silent film actor’s mansion, providing insight into early Hollywood history. Additionally, the Pioneer Oil Refinery, designated as California Historical Landmark No. 172, stands as the world’s oldest surviving oil refinery and marks the site of California’s first commercially successful refining operation.

The area has also served as a backdrop for numerous film and television productions, including the 1954 movie “Suddenly” and Disney’s 1973 film “The World’s Greatest Athlete.” The television series “The Magnificent Seven” was predominantly filmed in Newhall, highlighting its cinematic appeal. Moreover, the historic Lyons Station Stagecoach Stop, once located near present-day Eternal Valley Cemetery, underscores Newhall‘s significance as a transportation hub in the 19th century.

A pivotal event in Newhall‘s more recent history is the tragic Newhall incident of April 6, 1970. During a traffic stop, four California Highway Patrol officers were fatally shot by two heavily armed criminals. This incident led to a nationwide reevaluation of law enforcement training and officer safety protocols.

Today, Newhall‘s historic district, known as Old Town Newhall, serves as a vibrant cultural and business center. It features a variety of independent restaurants, shops, theaters, and a public library, all contributing to its unique charm and preserving the rich heritage of Santa Clarita’s oldest community.
