Canyon Country

Canyon Country is a community and district within the city of Santa Clarita, located in northwestern Los Angeles County, California, United States.

Canyon Country is north of the San Fernando Valley via Newhall Pass through the Santa Susana and San Gabriel Mountains. Canyon Country is located in the upper watershed of the Santa Clara River in the Santa Clarita Valley and Sierra Pelona Mountains foothills.

History

Canyon Country, located in the eastern part of Santa Clarita, California, boasts a rich history that reflects the broader narrative of the Santa Clarita Valley. The area was originally inhabited by the Tataviam people, who settled in the region around AD 450. Their presence laid the foundation for the diverse cultural tapestry that would follow.

In the mid-19th century, the area began to develop more formally. In 1872, Colonel Thomas Mitchell established the first school in the region, known today as Sulphur Springs Elementary School, marking the beginning of organized education in the Santa Clarita Valley.

The community underwent several name changes over the years, initially referred to as “Solemint,” a portmanteau of Soledad and Mint Canyons. It wasn’t until 1968 that the area was officially named “Canyon Country” following a popular vote.

The 20th century brought significant developments to Canyon Country. In 1946, Helm and Earl Schmidt opened an airfield on their 1,800-acre 6-S Ranch, located between Camp Plenty Road and Crossglade Avenue. This airfield operated until 1960, after which the land was transformed into the North Oaks housing tract, reflecting the post-war suburban expansion.

Additionally, the area was home to the Sterling Borax Mine in Tick Canyon, which was active from 1908 to 1921, producing significant quantities of borax and contributing to the local economy.

In 1987, Canyon Country, along with neighboring communities such as Newhall, Saugus, and Valencia, was incorporated into the city of Santa Clarita. This unification aimed to provide cohesive governance and foster a shared identity among the diverse communities within the Santa Clarita Valley.

Today, Canyon Country stands as a vibrant neighborhood, blending its historical roots with modern development, and continues to honor its rich heritage while evolving to meet the needs of its residents.
